Mehaffey Farm's new passively heated nursery greenhouse!

A view of the new nursery greenhouse from the street.

This is where we grow all of our seedlings. The passively heated greenhouse has lots of energy efficient features such as water filled black barrels and a black painted wall for solar heat absorbtion. Black Earth Compost is making new compost for us to pile up along the outside of the North-facing wall. Pipes circulate air from the greenhouse through the compost, which generates heat as it breaks down. That heat warms our greenhouse.

This blower controls the flow of air from the greenhouse, through the compost outside, bringing the warmed air back inside.
Here's the steel airflow conduit that gets buried in the compost.
