Four Season Gardening at Mehaffey Farm

Our new moveable hoophouse was installed last November over crops that were planted in late August. While we worked on the hoophouse, the greens were protected under quick-hoops (10-foot sections of 1" PVC pipe and Reemay held in place with sandbags.)

The hoophouse weathered all the storms with a little help from our excavator and shovels. We are pleased to report that we've eaten fresh greens from the greenhouse in every month since December. In February we started planting carrots and greens. We now have onions, lettuce, kale, chard and beets coming up. We just harvested the last of the winter spinach and a new crop will soon be planted in its place for early spring eating. We plan to install a second hoophouse this fall.
